"Life" in My Eyes

Life is always full of unpredictable and surprising events. It usually ends up drawing happy, angry, or even extremely sad moments.
Despite the fact that "Life is never easy", however, everything happens for a reason; it allows us to learn, find its meaning, and take the lessons from it. In the journey of my life, I found some memories that I don't merely want to throw away. Rather, I want to share and preserve them: keep them alive. Here I am, eager to tell you my stories.. a piece of too sweet to forget....

Teachable Moments

I will never forget when Rush Harless, our Indonesian group coordinator in US, took some times to talk to one of our members, Budi, about how important to be punctual and do things in the basis of group's need.

It was our first day in US after a very long journey spending many hours on jet planes, waiting in  the airports, and did airport administrations. for sure, we were very exhausted. Some of us got jet lag. literally we're fatigue. you know we had spent almost two days to reach Columbia. Then we finally arrived in an apartment which so called Cliff. We had small meeting with the university staffs then went to our own rooms. It was the first night and we were still not accustomed to sleeping that night because the reality in Indonesia it was still morning. Switching the custom was not that easy.

Morning comes. I woke up sleeplessly, rushed to down stair and got together with Indonesian fellows. Excited! that was what I feel. We talked and laughed a lot for many things that couldn't simply explain. Our agenda at that moment was doing a placement test in English Programs for Internationals (EPI) building. It said it's a 30-minute-walking spot. and off we went.

But wait a minute! we lost some one. yap, Budi. where is he? had something happened with him? we all were worried. In the same time we felt really shy to Rush who continuously asked about his presence. after a reasonable time Budi showed up. He look really tired as we did. I had thought that we would directly move on to the place (since we're late and we had to do the test, the test oh my God) before Rush said, not yet. "I won't miss the teaching moment." he said. Then he talked to Budi in a very friendly manner. "Budi, what would you feel if, when you are all ready, and your friends never showed up?." Budi replied, "I would be very disappointed, Rush." Rush: "so would you do again things that you don't like to the rest of your friends?." Budi said: "I will never do it again, Rush."

well, at that moment i was thinking if Rush had not talked to Budi, Budi would not have know he did wrong. It would happen if Rush just an "easy going" and let it happen. And Budi would probably not changed.

Now that I am a teacher. A real teacher. I always find so many "teaching moments" in the process of teaching. I could be "friendly" to my students by letting they do what they want or what they like. The fact is I don't do it. I always use the teaching moments to improve my students behavior in the class, boost their motivation, and just simply say what they do is not proper. And it works. To my observation, they are improved at their manner as well as motivation. Thanks to XI IPA 1 for always providing me the "Teaching Moments"
